The fact is that if people consider Lukas Roels’ work to be polemic, this reflects their own view on art, rather than the essence of the photographs. What is it that is so controversial about them, really? In my opinion, it is the impotence to perceive art with an open mind.

I met Lukas Roels in March 2009 at the inauguration of his exhibition “Angels of Time” at the Geuzenhuis in Ghent, Belgium. What struck me was the openness and the innocent serenity of the works exhibited. The photographs depict naked children who feel confident, at times slightly mischievous, and they reflect the photographer’s wit, without ever being provocative or offensive.
